John Henry Gately
1860-1921

Started Gately Funeral Home in 1889 on Wyoming Ave in Melrose then moved to Myrtle St. next to the present day Mary Foley Park. The Melrose Phone Book in the early 1900's had John H. Gately listed as John H. Gately Undertaker/Baggage Handler Wyoming Station. Later the name was changed to John H. Gately & Son Funeral Home. John H. Gately was also one of the ushers at the corner-laying ceremony at St. Mary's Church in 1894. Mr. Gately married Mary (Lynde) Gately, a direct descendent of the Melrose Lynde Family, and they had 3 children: Dr. Lynde Gately, Clara (Gately) Mahoney and John Winfield Gately.

John Winfield Gately
1895-1943

John W. Gately took over the family business after the death of his father. John Winfield Gately married Mary J. (Foley) Gately and they had one son named John Henry Gately. John W. Gately ran the business until his untimely death in 1943. John W. Gately was the second generation of the Gately Funeral Home and was a 4th degree knight at the Melrose Knights of Columbus.

Mary J. (Foley) Gately
1900-1993

Mary J. Gately received her funeral director's license Dec. 31, 1942 and took over the funeral home after her husband's death. Mary J. Gately was involved with running the funeral home from 1943 to 1990, when she suffered a stroke at the age of 90. Mary was one of the first women who owned their own businesses in the 1940's and 1950's. In 1949 Mary purchased the corner lot at W. Foster and Myrtle St. She fought to get the block zoned for business and moved the business from Myrtle St. to 79 Foster St. in 1950. Later she purchased a triple-decker home next to her on Myrtle St. to make way for expansion.

John Henry Gately
1927-1980

John H. Gately, the third generation of Gately Funeral Home, received his funeral director's license in 1949 after serving in the Navy during WWII. He joined his mother Mary J. Gately and together they ran the business for 31 years. In 1960 John H. Gately incorporated the business and it officially become Gately Funeral Service Inc. Two years later he added a large addition to the property. John H. Gately married Elinor (Thompson) Gately and they had five children: Patricia, Cynthia, Pamela, Lynda and John W. Gately. In 1980 John H. Gately died suddenly at the age of 51.

Elinor T. Gately
1929-1999

Elinor T. Gately graduated from N.E. Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences Magna Cum Laude and received her funeral director's license in 1982. She joined her mother-in-law, Mary J. Gately (age 80), and her son, John W. Gately, in the family business. Elinor T. Gately was a licensed funeral director for 17 years. In 1994 Elinor T. and John W. added an addition and renovated the funeral home. Elinor passed away on February 13, 1999.

John W. Gately

John W. Gately, the fourth generation of Gately Funeral Home, received his funeral director's license in 1984 and ran the business with his grandmother Mary J. Gately and mother Elinor T. Gately. John W. Gately married Lorraine (McCarthy) Gately and they have two children: John Henry Gately (5th generation) and Melissa G. Gately. Elinor T. Gately and John W. Gately worked side by side for 15 years. John W., Lorraine M., John H. and Melissa G. Gately will continue the legacy of the Gately Family and Gately Funeral Service Inc.
