Albert W. "Al", Mayer, Jr., of Melrose, died at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital on Feb. 14, 2014 at the age of 77. Al was born in Dorchester, raised in S. Braintree & a graduate of S. Braintree High School, Class of 1954. He went on to earn his B.S.Ed from Bridgewater State College in 1958, his M.Ed from Boston State College in 1962, his Ed.D from Boston University in 1971 and a Certificate from Salem State College in 1986. Al served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959-1960 as an Assistant to the Base Education Officer at Camp Lejeune, NC. He worked as a Social Studies Teacher from 1960-1967 at the Lincoln School in Melrose, Supervisor of Social Studies from 1972-1981 at the Horace Mann Laboratory School at Salem State College, a visiting Lecturer at Salem State College from 1974-1995 and a Teacher at the Sacred Heart School in Lawrence from 1999-2004. Al was a Boy Scout Leader in Melrose for troops # 615 and #635 and was also an Eagle Scout & Silver Beaver. He was a member of the Melrose Knights of Columbus and also a member of the Melrose School Committee for 15 years. Al loved spending time with his family and traveling to Austria & Switzerland. He was the beloved husband of Jo Ann (Hanson) Mayers for 55 years. Loving father of Brenda Mayer Walsh of Saugus, Albert W. Mayers III & his wife Linda of NJ, Sandra McManus & her husband Dana of Danvers. Cherished grandfather of Daniel, Alecia, Rachel, Sarah and the late Nicole. Caring brother of Jeanette Beach Payne of RI. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Tuesday, Feb. 18th at 9AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Incarnation Church, 429 Upham St., Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Monday from 4-8PM. Burial will be private.
