Alfonso M. Giangrande, of Melrose, died at The Atrium in Danvers on Nov. 9, 2014 at the age of 89. Alfonso was born in East Boston, raised in Somerville, a graduate of Boston English High School with honors and went on to attend Boston University. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After returning from the war, he resided in Malden for 15 years and Melrose for over 40 years. Alfonso worked as a Supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service at the South Postal Annex in Boston for over 30 years before his retirement at the age of 62. He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Melrose for many years and was very active at the Senior's Club of Melrose. Alfonso was an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed gardening & having all of his family together. He was always honest, kind and a very giving person. Alfonso was the beloved husband of the late Antonette F. (Moriello) Giangrande for 62 years. Loving father of Patricia R. Garrity & her husband Michael of Topsfield, Linda A. Bruen of Reading & Lisa M. Buchert & her husband Scott of Topsfield. Cherished grandfather of Christalee, Michael, Jason, Andrew & Ryan Garrity, Melissa Osborn, Kimberly Bruen & Scott Buchert, Jr. Great grandfather of Alexa. Caring brother of Dorothea Bianchi of Arlington, Elaine Giangrande of Somerville & Arthur Giangrande of N. Reading. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins & friends. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Wednesday, Nov. 12th at 8AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose at 9AM. Relative & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8PM. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
