Obituary

ANASTASI Alfred (Fred) James, age 84, of Melrose, died on Thursday, September 4, 2003, in his home at 167 Waverly Avenue, Melrose. Alfred was born in Boston to the late Anthony and Grace Cucinatta Anastasi on April 15, 1919. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, the former Patricia King of Danvers; two sons, Mark T. Anastasi and wife Paula of Bridgeport, CT and Peter K. Anastasi and wife Teresa of Melrose; two daughters, Paula Buehler and husband John of Boston and Jane Kelly and husband William of Middletown, RI. Alfred was the beloved grandfather of six, Kathryn, Emily and Hannah Anastasi of Melrose, William Kelly II of Middletown and Christopher and Robert Anastasi of Bridgeport. Alfred was pre-deceased by his two brothers, Anthony and Robert Anastasi, and leaves his sister, Margaret Mitchell of Quincy. He also leaves brother-in-law John D. King of Danvers and family friend Rita Lee of Melrose. Alfred served for four years during WWII in the 8th Army Air Corps. Corporal Anastasi was assigned to the European Theatre and was stationed in England, France and Germany. He earned his degree in design from the Boston Art Institute and was employed for 38 years by Dennison Manufacturing Co. before retiring as Assistant Manager of the Art Department. He also did advertising design for the former Record American and Herald American newspapers. Following retirement Fred enjoyed oil painting and pencil sketching seascapes, clipper ships and portraits. He was the recipient of numerous artistic awards and honors including a National Tuberculosis Association Christmas Seal Design Award, several Liberty Mutual Insurance calendar art awards and the 1991 City of Melrose Fair Housing bookmark design competition. Friends may call on Sunday, September 7, 2003 from 4 to 8 p. m. at Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster Street, Melrose. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 8, 2003 at 11:30 a. m. at the Incarnation Church, 429 Upham Street, Melrose. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made for GU cancer research to the Donald Kaufman Research and Education Fund at MGH, Massachusetts General Hospital Development Office, 100 Charles River Plaza, Suite 600, Boston, MA, 02114 or to the Incarnation Church for the benefit of the Youth Group
