Alfred V. Flynn of Melrose, MA and Wolfeboro, NH died suddenly at his lakeside home on Friday, September 6, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara (Lynch) of Melrose and their three daughters: Mary Shaw and husband Larry of Weston, their son David of Melrose and daughter Katherine of Weston; Annmarie Flynn and companion Paula and daughter Karen of Cambridge; Rosemary Lounsbury and husband Scott and their son Matthew of Wolfeboro, NH. Also, sisters Laura Denault of Topsfield, MA and Frances Alexander of Beverly, MA; brother-in-law Jack Lynch and wife Bernadine of Tucson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Edward P. Flynn of San Francisco, CA. He graduated from Danvers High School in 1947, Boston College in 1951, and Salem State College in 1971. He served as a 1st Lt. in the United States Army Artillery (1951-1953), worked as a sales engineer for Norton Company (1953-1971) and taught at Malden High School (1971-1982). He was dedicated to church and community. Activities included past presidency of the Most Blessed Sacrament Holy Name Society, the Melrose Communtiy Council, the Roosevelt School Parent Teachers Association and the Melrose Council of the Experiment in International Living. He worked extensively with the Christian Family Movement, the Archdiocesan Pre-Cana Board, the Melrose Bi-Centennial Committee, the United Fund and the Democratic City Committee. He was a teacher of Christian Doctrine, founded the Key Club at Malden High School and published the original edition of Melrose - Your City. At the time of his death he was a Eucharistic Minister at Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield, MA and St. Cecilia Church in Wolfeboro, NH. He was on the Board of Directors of the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts and served in numerous capacities within the Lake Wentworth Foundation and the Stamp Act Island Management Committee. His interests centered primarily on his family but included an Interfaith discusion group of more than thirty years standing, gardening, boating, enviromental issues and extensive international travel. Calling hours will be on Monday, 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Gately Funeral Home in Melrose.
