Obituary

Anna T (Bernhard) Richard, 92, a lifelong resident of Medford, MA and most recently a resident of Colonial Gardens in Beverly, passed peacefully at Kaplan Hospice House in Danvers on December 27, 2020. Born September 15, 1928, in Boston, MA she was preceded in death by her parents, Annie (Foley) Bernhard and August "Gus" Bernhard and her brothers William (as an infant) and Thomas Bernhard, and his wife Rita of Melrose, MA. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Roger Richard. She was the loving mother of son Stephen Richard and his wife Virginia "Ginny" Richard of Lynnfield, MA, and daughter Michelle Arkins and her partner Donald DeWart of Topsfield, MA. Cherished Nana of Melanie Richard, Erica Richard, Stephanie Arkins and Jacqueline Arkins. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. She was a graduate of Medford High School Class of 1946 and completed additional business computation training at Harvard (which inspired one of her favorite lines: "I attended Harvard"). She spent several years working for Hood Milk company in the accounting department before she and Roger started their family. She and Roger treasured their many friends and family members whom they frequently socialized with and often traveled with to many locations around the Globe. She liked to embellish her travels by remembering to tell all that she and Roger sailed on 47 cruises. She and Roger visited all the continents but Antartica and more than 50 countries. Anna was known for her quips and would always entertain us with her wry sense of humor until weeks before her passing. Anna was an avid shopper. In her younger days she wouldn't miss "dollar days" at what is now downtown crossing in Boston. An avid bargain hunter and coupon user, Anna was meticulous at sorting all the weekly coupons and finding the deals wherever they may be. The words "free" "cheap" and "sale" were dear to her heart. Anna was known as a giver of both love and care for those less fortunate helping several elderly friends with their care and needs. Her caring didn't stop with the individuals she helped. She would support the Little Sisters of the Poor. Every year she would help run charity events for them. She would attend Ladies' Sodality. This Catholic society has four pursuits - 1) Religion, 2) Purity & virtue, 3) Charity, 4) Social. These explain Anna well. She worked at the B'nai B'rith Jewish restaurant at the Topsfield Fair for many years. She volunteered her time at the North Shore music theater as an usher. She was a long-standing member of the Mothers club at St Joseph school while her Children attended that school. She would help run the Mother's Club bingo every Wednesday night and on Thursday morning you could count on the leftover donuts for breakfast which was a treat. She loved people and being around people. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Saturday January 2, 2021 at St. Raphael's Church, 512 High Street, Medford, MA. Interment will be conducted at Puritan Lawn Cemetery, 185 Lake Street, Peabody, MA 01960 immediately following the church service. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, https://littlesistersofthepoorpawtucket.weshareonline.org/ws/opportunities/InMemorialOf/donate
