Anne Marie (Grifone) Hiland, of Nahant, formerly of Melrose, died peacefully on July 10, 2026, at the age of 84. She was born in Boston on June 23, 1942, to the late Lucy (Iannelli) and Antonio Grifone. The youngest of five, Anne was raised in East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School in 1960. She was proud of her East Boston roots, held her childhood memories dear, and remained close to her childhood friends her whole life.
Anne married her late husband Walter on June 14, 1973, and settled in Melrose to raise their daughter Lisa, who was born two years later. Anne was dedicated to her work at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital for over 30 years and made many dear friends during her myriad roles she held there. She loved spending summers in Wells, Maine with Lisa and her family, and gathering with friends and family for a good meal. Her bond with her long-time friends and her siblings, particularly her sisters Louise and Rita, was undeniable. Later in life, after losing Walter to cancer back in 1994, she moved from her beloved home in Melrose to Nahant where she lived with Lisa’s family. She had always wanted a big front porch and to live by the ocean. She cherished those last eight years living with her daughter, her caring son-in-law, and two granddaughters. She was incredibly proud of them. Every morning before leaving for school, the girls would each get a kiss and the same message from Nana: “Be kind and learn something new!”
Anne was the beloved wife of the late Walter William Hiland (born in Lynn). Loving mother of Lisa and her husband Nathan Bell of Nahant. Proud grandmother of Sadie (age 16) and Lucy (age 12).Predeceased by her beloved siblings Joseph Grifoneand his wife Nancy, Louise (Grifone) Cahill, Anthony Grifone, and Rita (Grifone) Nason & her husband Jack. She is also survived by her goddaughter and niece, Laurie Nason; and her nephews John Nason III and his wife Corrine, and Robert Nason. As well as her sister-in-law (her late brother Anthony’s wife) Donna Gillis of New Mexico, and several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends from all chapters ofher life.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am on Monday, July 20th, 2026, at Incarnation Church, 425 Upham St., Melrose. Burial to follow the mass at Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St., Melrose. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Thomas Aquinas Church, 248 Nahant Rd., Nahant, MA 01908.
