Obituary

Anthony L. Santagate, of Melrose, died on March 20, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born in Belmont, MA to the late Marion (Spezzano) and Gaetano Santagate. Anthony was raised in Belmont and graduated from Belmont High School. After high school Anthony earned an associate degree from Burdett College before enlisting in the United States Airforce where he served honorably for four years. He was a member of the 313th Air Divison Softball team. As an experienced softball player, they traveled extensively during his time in Okinawa, Japan. In his early years, he enjoyed playing tennis, golf and softball.

Anthony worked at Draper Laboratories for over 40 years as the Associate Director of Accounting. He loved to be near the ocean often vacationing in York, Ogunquit, and Wells Maine. He enjoyed eating seafood especially muscles and lobster. Anthony and Joanne spent many years vacationing in Naples, Florida.

Anthony was the beloved husband of Joanne (Vecchio) Santagate of Melrose. Loving father of James Santagate and his wife Amanda of Braintree. Proud grandfather of Benjamin and Jacob whom he adored tremendously. Cherished brother of Marianne Couch and her husband Jerry of New Hampshire, and uncle to Craig and Courtney. Cherished brother-in-law of Rosemarie Vecchio and her husband Stephen Jackson of Melrose, and uncle to Alexandra and Victoria. He is also survived by his long time friend from elementary school David DeSarno and his wife Jan of Vermont. He is survived by his dearest cousins and many wonderful friends, with whom he enjoyed frequent gatherings celebrating their friendship.

Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, April 4th 2025, from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 5th 2025, at 10:30 am at the Gately Funeral Home. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Notre Dame Cristo Rey High School, 203 Lawrence St., Methuen MA, 01844. Attention: Sister Maryalyce Gilfeather.
