Obituary

Arthur W. Aylward, of Watertown, formerly of Melrose, died at the Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford on June 26, 2014 at the age of 85. Arthur was born in Boston and raised in Jamaica Plain. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War with the 625th Field Artillery Battalion, 40th Infantry Division (California National Guard). He was awarded with Republic of Korea War Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars, United Nations Korean Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal which were presented to him by General Leonid Kondratiuk in 2010 (photo attached). Arthur worked as a Printer for Winthrop Printing & Offset in S. Boston for 35 years before retiring at the age of 57. He resided in Melrose for over 30 years and was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts Troop 635 at the Incarnation Church in Melrose for 8 years. Arthur was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Church in Melrose for many years. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid Red Sox & Patriots and sports fan. Arthur loved his retirement and spending his time with his children & many grandchildren. He was the beloved husband of the late Lillian A. (Smith) Aylward. Loving father of Karen Boylan & her husband Leonard of Danvers, James Aylward & his wife Kija Kim of Belmont, Michael Aylward & his wife Jillian of VA, Brian Aylward & his wife May Sun of Cambridge, Maureen Aylward & her former husband William Wrinn of Rockport and Christopher Aylward & his wife Tina of NY. Cousin of Gloria Fabiano of Tewksbury and Dorothy Harnish of NH. Also survived by 10 loving grandchildren. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Tuesday, July 1st at 8:30AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Monday from 6-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Arthur was a participant in a genetics study of Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD) at The New England Eye Center of Tufts Medical Center, led by world renowned researcher Dr. Johanna Seddon, and posthumously donated his eyes to further her important research. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Macular Degeneration Research Fund, New England Eye Center, Tufts Medical Center, 800 Washington St., P.O. Box, 450, Boston, MA 02111.
