Arthur R. O'Neill, 82, died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital Sunday after a brief illness. Born and raised in Somerville, he graduated from Somerville High in 1937, served in the Navy as a radarman 3rd class. Arthur graduated from Northeastern University in 1954. He was an auditor for the Navy at the Charlestown Navy Shipyard for 27 yrs and then at the Fargo Building in Boston for the Federal Highway Dept. until he retired in 1978. Arthur was an usher at St Mary's Church for 40 yrs , a member of the Holy Name Society, the National Assoc of Retired Federal Employees, AARP and the Certified Internal Auditors. He was the husband of the late Patricia J. (Dillon) O'Neill. Father of Gerald F. & Anne O'Neill of Reading, Daniel A. and Stephen E. O'Neill both of Melrose, Mary T. Bates of Saugus, and Patricia A. and Ned Nolan of Ireland, and the late Ann and Elizabeth O'Neill. Brother of Helen McDade of Malden, Mildred Goodwin of Belmont, Barbara Ferris & Bernadette Black both of Florida, and the late John, Walter, & Edward O'Neill and Mary Nickerson. Also survived by 5 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Friday, May 3 at 9a.m. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, corner of Myrtle & Herbert Sts. Melrose at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Wednesday 7-9 pm, and Thursday 2-4 pm and 7-9pm. Burial will be in Wyoming Cemetery Melrose. WWII Navy Veteran.
