Augustine J. Gus Twomey of Chelsea, formerly of Melrose, passed away at the Chelsea Soldiers Home on Thursday, February 22, 2007. He was 88 years old. Born on December 11, 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts to the late Jeremiah & Katherine (Ford) Twomey, Gus graduated from St. Johns Prep School of Danvers and later from Merrimack College. He received his Masters Degree from the Catholic University of Washington D.C. Mr. Twomey served as a Corporal in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was employed with many area banks throughout his career, working himself up through the ranks. He started as a bank teller and ended up as a bank manager. He worked for such banks as Central Co-operative and The First National Bank of Boston. Gus was a very religious man, always going to Mass daily. He was very active at the Chelsea Soldiers Home where he spent the last 25 years of his life. He also enjoyed singing and playing cards. Augustine was the loving father of Michael J. Twomey of Winthrop, MA., Anita L. Phipps & her husband William of Hopkinton, MA. & Myles V. Twomey & his wife Dedra of Salem, NH. Cherished grandfather of Alexandra & Elizabeth Twomey. Caring brother of Gerry Burke of Sagamore Beach, MA & the late John Twomey, Joseph Twomey & Katherine Hurley. Also survived by many nieces & nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michaels Chapel located at the Chelsea Soldiers Home 91 Crest Ave. Chelsea, MA on Tues. Feb. 27th at 10AM. Family & friends invited. Visiting hours Mon. 2-4PM in the Cardinal Cushing Pavilion at the Soldiers Home. Interment in Massachusetts Veterans National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
