Barbara D. ( Kirmes ) Conrad, 72, died at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital Thursday after a brief illness. Born and raised in Melrose, she graduated from Melrose high class of 1951. Barbara was Korean War AirForce veteran, a Melrose Police Crossing Officer during the 1960's and the Veterans Services Officer for the Town of Wakefield when she retired in 1992. She was a member of the Harold O. Young Post #2394, past president of the Ladies Auxiliary at the post and a member of the Melrose Lodge of Elks. Barbara was a longtime resident of Melrose who had lived inWakefield for the past 5 years. She was the former wife of the late George E. Conrad. Mother of Jean A. & Sonny Atienza of Melrose and Leslie M. & Kevin Crovo of Melrose. Grandmother of Jessie and Alec Atienza. Sister of Victor Kirmes of Wakefield, Grace Bushee of Burlington, Jack Kirmes of Somerville and the late Marjorie Sousa, Bud Kirmes, William Kirmes, Frederick J. Kirmes Jr., and Adeline McShane. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W Foster St Melrose on Mon Sept 8 at 8 AM. Funeral Mass in St Mary's Church, corner of Myrtle & Herbert Sts, Melrose at 9 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday from 2 PM to 6 PM. Burial will be in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
