Betty Jean (Travis) Hatfield, of Somerville, formerly of Melrose, died at the Whidden Hospital on Sept. 16, 2013 at the age of 90. Betty was born & raised in Thurman, Iowa and a graduate of Thurman High School. She went on to serve her country as a Nurse's Aid in the U.S. Navy for several years during WWII. After WWII, Betty resided in Medford for many years, Melrose for 40 years and New Hampshire for 8 years. She was a huge Boston Red Sox fan, avid reader, awesome cook and loved spending time with her large family. She was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth R. Hatfield. Loving mother of Cynthia Burke of Saugus, Anne Watson & her husband Dean of NH, Dennis Hatfield & his wife Beth, Mark Hatfield & his wife Nelly, all of Melrose, Mary Connors & her husband Chris & Dorothy Hatfield, all of NH and the late Kenneth Hatfield, Jr. Also survived by 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Friday, Sept. 20th at 10:30AM. A Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose at 11:30AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Thursday from 4-8PM. Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover NH.
