Brian Christian Turley passed away peacefully at his home in Melrose on November 6, 2019 after sitting down to enjoy his lunch. He was 83 years old.
Brian, or "Tish" as he was known growing up, was born August 4, 1936 in Boston, MA, the fourth and last son to Thomas "TJ" and Winifred Turley. In his youth, Brian enjoyed summers at Camp Hale and Poland Springs Caddy Camp. He was educated at The Fessenden School, Phillips Exeter Academy, Roslindale High School and graduated from Harvard College, class of 1958. After graduation, Brian worked as a yacht steward on a power boat cruising New England waters. Nice work if you can get it. Brian then proudly served in the United States Army and Army Reserves. A week following his separation from Army green, he went to work as a cub copywriter with Dickie-Raymond Direct Mail advertising in Boston. The company eventually reformed into the DR Group where he became copy-chief, then creative director and ultimately senior vice president and creative director. After 21 years, he walked away to begin a new career as a creative direct marketing copywriter and consultant on his own for Brian Turley & Co.
Brian was President, Mail Marketing Club of New England; President, Melrose, MA Community Council; board member of the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay; chair of trustees of Melrose Memorial Hall; founder of Melrose Jazz Festival; board of governors Bellevue Golf Club; president Melrose, MA Red Cross; and was named "Direct Marketer of the Year," 1981. Brian was also the contributor to many direct marketing publications and the author of many direct marketing articles.
Brian was proud of his education, his Irish heritage and his gift of gab. He loved golf, a good joke, a stiff cocktail, playing Jeopardy, taco night, swing and jazz music, and just hanging out with friends at Bellevue Golf Club.
He was married to Ann-Marie Brown, whom he first spotted on the beach while working a summer at Severance Lodge on Lake Kezar in Lovell, Maine. Their union lasted until her death in 1995. Brian and Ann-Marie were the proud parents to three grateful children: Jennifer Rogers (Mark) of Centreville, VA , Jason Turley of Brookline and Jessica George (Rob) of Saugus. Brian was the boastful and loving grandfather or "papa" to Kirk, Kate, and Maddie Rogers, Ryan and Aubree Turley, Annabella and Maximilian George. Brian is also reunited with his parents and beloved brothers: Tom, Leo and David, all of whom predeceased him. He leaves behind many friends, nieces and nephews. He was greatly loved and will be missed. He truly was, "the very best there is."
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 from 4PM to 8PM at the Gately Funeral Home, Melrose, MA. A memorial service and internment will take place at a later date. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Brian, to "SEEM Collaborative" and mailed to: SEEM Prep at the Yuell School, 0 Crystal St., Wakefield, MA 01880 or by phone at 781.279.1361 x 1111 Your gift will assist in the education of students with autism, a cause very close to Brian's heart.
