Bruno P. Martel passed away at the Bearhill Nursing Center in Stoneham, on December 7, 2009; he was 82 years of age. Born in Chelsea on April 27, 1927 to the late Albin & Sylvia (Cuskey) Martel, he was raised in Melrose, attended Melrose Schools, and lived most of his life in Melrose and Malden the past 21 years. Bruno entered the US Navy in 1944 and served for 4 years during WWII as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class. Mr. Martel worked as a carpenter at Harvard University for 31 years. He was a member of the VFW Harold O'Young Post # 2394 in Melrose for the past 61 years. Bruno was one of the founding members of the Drill Team at the VFW. He spent many days donating his time to perform military honors for his fellow veterans at their funeral ceremonies. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Malden and St. Mary's Church in Melrose. Bruno was the beloved husband of 61 years to Hazel M. (Amirault) Bruno. Loving father of Paula Smith & her husband Michael of Wareham. Brother of Stanley Martel of Saugus & Martha Ashman of Melrose. Also survived by 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Wed. Dec. 9th at 9:30AM. Funeral Mass in Bruno's honor at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visitation Wednesday morning at the funeral home from 8:30-9:30AM. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in Bruno's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
