Burton A. "Deke" Humphrey of Melrose, died on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital after a period of declining health. He was 81 years old. Born on March 18, 1927 in Roxbury, MA to the late Stanley A. & Mary G. (Higgins) Humphrey, he was raised in Newton, Natick, Needham and Wakefield. Mr. Humphrey served in the United States Navy during World War II and then worked as a meat cutter with Chamber's Market in Needham Heights and then for Cerretani's Supermarket of Wakefield for 10 years. He was a Melrose resident for 18 years and a resident of the Steele House of Melrose for 17 years. He was a true friend to all who knew him, enjoyed bingo, visiting his great nieces & nephews, collecting Oriental objects and loved classical music and the opera. He was the caring brother of Stanley A. Humphrey of Virginia, Fredrick S. Humphrey of USAFH-Washington, D.C., Barbara A. Robinson of Sudbury and the late Bruce A. Humphrey. Loving uncle of Darlene F. Brown of Sudbury, Doreen M. Robinson of Maine, Dean F. Robinson also of Maine, Shane P. Humphrey of Virginia, Scott A. Humphrey also of Virginia, Kevin M. Humphrey of Newport News, Virginia & Sharon Duncan of Florida. Also survived by many great nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements by The Gately Funeral Home of Melrose are private.
