Carl W. Cann passed away at the Golden Living Center on Martin St. in Melrose, on Friday, July 26, 2013. He was 85 years of age. Carl was born in Rochester, NH to the late Harold & Beatrice (Damsell) Cann. He was raised in Exeter, New Hampshire and Medford, MA, graduated from Medford High School and attended MIT. He served his country with pride in the United States Army during WWII and also played baseball while serving in the Army. After his discharge from the service he went on to play semi-pro baseball for the Chicago White Sox farm team. Mr. Cann worked at Boston Stove before working as a metallurgical technician for the Duracell Corporation for over 15 years. Carl loved baseball and coached little league, minor league, major league, Babe Ruth and Intercity League baseball over the span of many years in the City of Melrose. He has been a longtime resident of Melrose, was a big Boston sports fan and enjoyed golfing. Mr. Cann enjoyed following all of his grandchildren's sporting events, dancing events and activities throughout their lives. He was the beloved husband of the late Jeanne (Darling) M. Cann. Devoted father of Kevin Cann & his wife Laurie of Townsend, Carla McCormack of Melrose, Denise Valdez & her husband Luiz of Melrose, Brian Cann & his wife Karen of Stoneham and Allen Cann of FL. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday, July 29th at 10AM, followed by a burial with military honors at Puritan Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.
