Obituary

Carl William Edward Johnson, of Melrose, MA, passed away on August 11 with his family by his side. Carl was born on July 17, 1940, to Carl and Ellen Johnson in Cambridge, MA.

While growing up in Somerville, Carl developed a strong work ethic, working summers to get through Matignon High School. After graduating he played semi pro football for the South Boston Chippewas while going to Northeastern University. He joined the National Guard during the Vietnam War and proudly served before starting a family.

Through friends he met the love of his life, Mary Louise Buckley, and they married on June 26, 1965, and remained together until Mary Louises' passing on February 3, 2020. Through the encouragement of his wife, his love for education flourished. Where he went on to finish his degree from Northeastern University, BS, Master of Education from Suffolk University, and Master of Arts from University of Massachusetts. After retiring from his business career at Arthur D Little in 1995, Carl began his teaching career at his alma mater, Matignon High School. He rose to become Chairman of the History Department, and he became a beloved and passionate history teacher until his retirement in 2013.

Everyone who knew Carl knew he was an extremely fun-loving, friendly, kind, generous and intelligent person. He thoroughly enjoyed his summers with his family at Halfmoon Lake and winters in North Conway, while traveling throughout Europe with his Loving Wife Mary Louise.

He is survived by his son Paul Johnson and wife Jane Harnden of Kearsarge, NH; his daughter Maureen Johnson and husband Joseph Pizzarello of Saugus, MA; his beloved granddaughters, Olivia DeSimone and her wife, Danielle DeSimone, Sophia Imbrescia, Sydney Imbrescia and Ava Imbrescia.

Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 4:00-7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, 9 Herbert St. Melrose on Wednesday, August 16th at 9:00AM. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Carl's name to St. Mary's School, 4 Myrtle St. Melrose, MA 02176.
