Obituary

Carmela M. Yannaco, 94, of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 6, 2024.

Carmela is survived by her loving family: daughter Marie Yannaco-Grant and son-in-law Ken Grant; son Richard Yannaco and daughter-in-law Judy Yannaco; granddaughters Lisa Yannaco, Marisa Zastrow and Amanda Grant-Rose, and their families; great grandchildren Aster, Tyler and Griffin Zastrow, Emerson and Amelia Rose; and brother Richard Parrella and sister-in-law Adele Parrella. She was preceded in death by her husband Ciro (Jerry) Yannaco, and by her brother Angelo Parrella.

Carmela was an educator and crafter. She taught in the Everett Public Schools, where seats in her classes were prized. She was happiest when she was doing something with her hands - cooking, painting, knitting, sewing or tailoring - and helping others gain new skills. Carmela was an active participant at the Milano Family Center, Melrose, where she joined in exercise classes, painting, crafts, and her special love of caning. Many family members were gifted with one or more of her beautifully restored, caned chairs.

Carmela's love of family is well remembered. Her biggest joy was to cook for family and have them gathered around her dining room table. Following her in the kitchen resulted in many of the family's favorite recipes. She attended with pride all of the graduations, weddings and family gatherings. Surrounded by family, she was truly happy. Carmela's family is grateful for the care given at The Residence at Melrose Station. For over two years, their wonderful staff provided a safe and kind setting for her. She enjoyed life more fully because of their care.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024, at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose from 10:00AM-11:00AM, followed by a funeral service in the funeral home at 11:00AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carmela's name to the Milano Family Senior Center, 235 West Foster Street, Melrose MA 02176.
