Carol E. (Holt) "Midge" McLaughlin, 71, of Scarborough, Maine, formerly of Melrose, died on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a 3+ year courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born to the late Velma (Bedell) Hanson on January 7, 1941 in Medford, Massachusetts. Carol graduated from Medford High School and then later received an Associate's Degree from Bunker Hill Community College after raising her 7 children. She retired from the Lexington School System in 2003 after working for many years. She retired to Maine and volunteered at and participated in the many activities at the Cancer Community Center in South Portland. She loved her family and friends; and enjoyed the ocean, Higgins Beach in Scarborough, sewing, gardening, traveling, reading and cooking. She was a member of St. Mary's parish in Melrose for many years and a beloved member of the Ovarian Cancer Support Group at Boston Medical Center and patient of Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Carol was the devoted wife of the late Richard A. McLaughlin with whom she shared 44 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of Robin C. McLaughlin of Lexington, Rick A. McLaughlin & his wife Kim (Carpenito) of Hudson, NH, Sherri E. Mancini & her husband Tony of Lynnfield, Susan A. McLaughlin of Cohasset, Lisa M. Gibbons & her husband David of Saco, Maine, Kelly A. McLaughlin of Hull, and Jennifer L. Miller & her husband Michael of Framingham. Cherished grandmother of Leah, Ricky, Alyssa, Michael, Kelsey, Anthony, Emma, Michelle, Amanda, Adam, Joan, Katherine & Andrew. Sister of Donald, Robert, Terri & of the late Harold and Sally. The family thanks her dear friends Marion Zaccardi & Joyce Dimick. Carol's funeral will be held from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Monday, December 17th at 10AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Mary's Church Herbert St., Melrose at 11AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours Sunday from 2-6PM.
