CATHERINE M. (GRANT) HIGGINS Catherine Grant Higgins of Melrose, a teacher, librarian, actress, and voluntary leader, died in her sleep with family. She was 96. Mrs. Higgins was born and raised in Medford, a graduate of Girls Catholic High School in Malden in 1926 and of Emmanuel College in Boston in 1931. She worked as a librarian and taught high school English in Medford. For many years she directed school and amateur plays in the Melrose area. She loved theater and was always willing to put together a performance of a classic play or develop a new production. She and her husband, the late Jack Higgins, built a successful arbitration practice working with the American Arbitration Association where Mrs. Higgins managed the office. Earlier, she worked as a volunteer at Emmanuel College, frequently on a full-time basis. She was a resident of Melrose for 62 years, an active volunteer in the Melrose Community and at St. Marys Church. Mrs. Higgins is the widow of John E. Jack Higgins. Mother of John E. Higgins Jr. of Chevy Chase, MD, Richard G. Higgins of Londonderry, NH, Mary Catherine Harbin of Rockville, MD and Robert F. Higgins of Boston. Sister of the late William, Thomas & Marguerite Grant. Also survived by 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday October 23rd, at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Friday 4-8PM. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.
