Christine (Harris) Petmezakis, a long time resident of Melrose, died on January 6, 2018. Christine was born on September 18, 1932 to George and Efrosene (Chickles) Harris. She was raised in Mattapan and graduated from Hyde Park High School. Christine continued her education at the Fay School in Boston and went on to work as a legal secretary for Paul T. Smith in Boston.
Christine married her late husband, George, and settled in Malden then Melrose to raise their family. After her children grew older, Christine returned to working as a legal secretary for Killam & Cinella Law Firm in Melrose. After losing George in 1978, Christine moved her career as a legal secretary to Boston with the firm of Shriberg and Sorbello, and finally the Law Firm of Ropes and Gray. She retired in 1998. Christine was a devoted member of her Church. She was a member of the Philoptochos Organization, attended Bible study, and volunteered as an Office Angel. Christine even started the Church book store. In addition to her time volunteering at Church, Christine also spent time volunteering at the Melrose Public Library, and was a member of their book club. She was also a volunteer for the Bridge in Melrose serving as a reading aid in the Winthrop School. Over the course of her life, Christine travelled throughout the world to places such as the Holy Lands, Paris, London, Greece, California, Austria, and Oberammergau, Germany.
The most important part of Christine's life was her family. She was always at her happiest surrounded by those she loved. She'll be greatly missed by them all.
Christine was the beloved wife of the late George J. Petmezakis. Mother of Elaine Kakis & her husband Evan of Illinois, Joyce Powell & her husband Jay of Tyngsborough, Anne Hartigan Pankratz & her husband Michael of Billerica. Grandmother of Stephan & his wife Christina, George, Paula & her husband Will, Katherine, Christina, George, and Jennifer. Step-grandmother of Christine & David. Great-grandmother of Angelo, Sia, & Henry. Sister-in-law of Katherine Gountanis & her husband Nick of CA, Cynthia Harris, & Priscilla Harris. Pre-deceased by her parents, her brothers James Harris & John Harris, and her son-in-law Bruce Hartigan. Also survived by many Godchildren, nieces, nephews, & cousins. Visiting Hours will be held on Tues., Jan. 9, from 4-8 PM at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 AM on Wed., Jan. 10, at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 70 Montvale Ave., Woburn. Interment to follow the service at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend.
