Clair M. (Hosford) Colella, of Peabody, formerly of Wakefield and Malden, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020, at age 90 surrounded by her loving family.
Clair was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, in 1930 to William H. Hosford, a printing technician in Boston, and Marion A. (Smith) Hosford, a homemaker. She grew up in Malden and graduated from Malden High School in 1947. Following high school, she completed a two year program at the Malden Business School. While working for Socony Oil Company as a secretary, she married her high school sweetheart, Guy V. Colella, in 1952, whom she survived after 63 loving years of marriage. Following her husband's college graduation, the couple settled in Malden where they raised their five children. Clair took great pride and joy in her family and was a devoted mother. She was an active member of Sacred Hearts Church. For many years at election time, she volunteered to work at the polls. Later, as an "empty nester," Clair went back to part-time work as a legal secretary for a private law firm and later worked for the Jordan Marsh Company department store. As a Wakefield resident, Clair was an active member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Joseph's Church. Among her interests, Clair enjoyed knitting and bowling and she was an accomplished ballroom dancer. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and took great interest and pride in their accomplishments. Retirement brought world travel with her husband to destinations in the U. S. and Europe. It also brought a new residence in 2010 at the Brooksby Village retirement community in Peabody where she and her husband had many cherished friends.
Clair was the loving mother of Scott Colella and his husband Ricardo DeFrutos of Exeter, NH; Barry Colella and his wife Lauren of Chelmsford, MA; Marlene Levesque and her husband Roger of Tewksbury, MA; Wayne Colella and his wife Jodi of Somerville, MA; and Joanne Boag and her husband Scott of Woburn, MA. She was the cherished grandmother of Merry, Amanda, Devon, Caitlin, Jason, Clair, Ethan, Jaimee and Tess. She was the caring sister of Jean Stoddard and her husband Ralph of Stoneham, and Joyce Hosford of Malden. She was the dear sister-in-law of Laura MacMullin of Woburn, and the late Olympia McConnell. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Due to the current health crisis, the funeral services will be private. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Clair's name to the American Glaucoma Society, 655 Beach St., San Francisco, CA 94109.
