Craig L. Gilleland, of Melrose, passed away peacefully in his favorite chair on November 17, 2023. He was 72 years old.
Craig was born in Medford, raised in Melrose and attended Melrose High School graduating in the Class of 1970. He was a standout athlete at Melrose High School where he excelled in Football and Track. He notably set a school record for the shot-put event in track.
After graduation, Craig worked locally for the Telephone Company briefly before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Craig proudly served his country during the Vietnam war as a Field Radio Operator. During his active service in Vietnam, he earned the Rifle Marksman badge, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal 1*. He transitioned to the USMC Reserve following his active tour of duty in Vietnam at the rank of LCpl (Lance corporal).
Craig resumed his professional career in telecommunications with NE Telephone Company which eventually evolved to the current Verizon. He retired in 2010 as a Rated Head Lineman. He was described by his colleagues as an exceptional Lineman.
Craig was an avid sports enthusiast. One of his favorite pastimes was following college and pro football and looked forward to football season each year. He cheered for his favorite college teams, Notre Dame and Penn State and was a diehard Patriots fan. Craig was an accomplished skier and a longtime member of the Brettl Hupfers Ski and Sports Club in Bartlett, NH where he served as President of the club for several terms.
Craig enjoyed the company of his many valued friends and acquaintances and was especially close to Fred Somers, Charlie Farrell, Fran Turner, and Jean Ryder.
Craig is survived by his immediate family, Bonnie Deveau and husband Dana Burleigh, Gorham, ME., Scott Gilleland, Melrose, MA, and extended family Ashley & Andy Shamos & family, Standish, ME., and Jordan & Julie Burleigh & family.
A graveside service with Marine Corps honors will be held at the Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St., Melrose on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 11:00AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend.
