David M. Byrne passed away at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on Thursday, January 14, 2010. He was 83 years of age. Mr. Byrne was born in Melrose on October 23, 1926 to the late Lawrence & Viola (Browne) Byrne. He was raised in Melrose, graduated from St. Mary's Grammar School, Melrose High School and Suffolk University where he was a member of the hockey team. David was pulled out of high school for WWII where he served his country proudly as a seaman 1st class in the US Navy. After his discharge he returned to school to finish high school and go on to college. Mr. Byrne worked as a system analyst for Western Electric for over 35 years, as an accountant for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 5 years and for the PBS television company Night Owl Productions for a few years. He was a Wakefield resident for the past 55 years, was a former grand knight at the Melrose K of C and a longtime member of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Greenwood. David enjoyed going out to dinner, loved the times spent at his summer home on Drake Island in Maine, traveling the world with his wife Priscilla and was an avid Boston sports fan, especially baseball & hockey. Mr. Byrne was the husband of 38 years to the late Priscilla A. (Toner) Byrne. Father of Paula E. Byrne of Melrose, Peter D. Byrne of Malden and Martha W. Brooks & her husband Douglas of Sterling. Grandfather of Monica L. Wexler of Sterling & P. Erich Wexler of Falmouth. Brother of Frances Byrne & Dorothy Goldstein both of NH. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Tuesday, January 19th at 9:30AM. Funeral Mass in David's honor at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield, at 10AM. Visitation prior to the funeral Tuesday morning from 8:30 9:30AM. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
