Obituary

Davis G. Droll, Jr. of Peabody, died at the Brockton Veterans Hospital on October 23, 2007. He was 75 years old. Born in Annapolis, Maryland on June 19, 1932 to the late Davis & Angela (Scott) Droll, he was raised in Annapolis and graduated from St. Marys High School, class of 1950, where he was a member of the Naval Reserve. Although he was awarded a scholarship for football, Dave chose rather to enter the Trappist Monastery in Berryville, Virginia, now Holy Cross Abbey, where he remained for five years. Upon leaving the monastery he was drafted into the Army where met his future wife, Margaret Gorman. He was assigned to the Army Security Agency, serving in the region of Kassel, Germany. From there, Dave and Margaret would soon be married in nearby Basil, Switzerland, then honeymooning in Venice. At the end of his military service, he went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Communications at the University of Notre Dame, class of 1964, where he and Margaret also received a son. In the early 60's, Dave worked as a director for the USO in Naples, Italy and Tokyo, Japan. The mid-late 60's found him in television broadcasting in Boston and in Worcester. He served the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston as Director of Religious Education in Needham, and in the early 70's, in New Jersey, he was a Rep for Time-Life publishing's children's religious education division. He worked for many years with friends the Kahn Family, at Mayo & Glorias House of Health on Rt. 1, Lynnfield, and for many more years with dear friend Matthew Gaeta at Gaeta's Shell, also on Route 1. Dave loved prayer, and loved to read Scripture and the writings of Church Mystics and Saints. Other reading included P.G. Wodehouse, Tolkien, science and science-fiction, and detective novels. He spent many hours walking Crane's Beach and the beaches of Nahant, enjoyed food and wine, art, travel, his pets, photography, having a cold beer over ice, NFL & college ball, dancing, Walden, classical music, and was a quietly patriotic man. He was the former husband of Margaret E. (Gorman) Droll of Newton Center, loving father of Davis G. Droll III of Dorchester, caring brother of Al Droll & his wife Flo of Virginia Beach, VA. & Wayne Droll of Annapolis, MD. Uncle of Kelley Droll Hicks, JoAnne Droll Zember, Clint Droll & Gibbons Droll, all of VA. Brother-in-law of Joseph H. Gorman of Wells, ME, Jane Beyer of Littleton, NH, Ann T. Madden of Kingston, MA, Thomas Madden (deceased), Edward J. Gorman & Patricia of Ridgefield, CT., and C. Cynthia (Cin) Gorman of Oakton, VA. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Sat. Nov.3rd at 9AM. Funeral mass in Our Lady of the Assumption Church 758 Salem St., Lynnfield at 10AM. Family & friends invited. Visiting hours Fri. 4-8PM.
