Edward M. Dowling passed away at the Daniels House Nursing Home in Reading, on Friday, April 4, 2014. He was 92 years of age. Edward was born in Chelsea, raised in Everett, graduated from Everett High School and from Wentworth Institute. He served his country with pride in the US Army during WWII. Mr. Dowling lived in Swampscott for several years, East Hampstead, NH for over 30 years and the past several years in Reading. He worked in research and development for Bell Labs, formerly known as AT&T Bell Laboratories, for over 30 years. Mr. Dowling enjoyed gardening and was a lover of all animals. Ed had a passion for inventing and enjoyed experimenting with all types of electrical equipment. He was the son of the late Thomas J. & Marion L. (Kimball) Dowling. Cousin of Joan Barton & her late husband Richard of Melrose, Ann Glines & her husband Dr. George Glines of Charlestown and Joseph Dowling & his wife Margaret of Lynn. Also survived by several other cousins, family members and friends. Family & friends are invited to gather at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Wednesday, April 9th from 10:00-11:00AM with a funeral service being held at 11AM. Burial with military honors to follow at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
