Obituary

Edward J. Tucker Sr. passed away at home on Tuesday, May 5, 2009. He was 83 years of age. Ed was born in Springfield, raised in Charlestown, graduated from Charlestown High School and was a Sea Scout at the high school. At age 16 he went to work at the Charlestown Shipyard before entering the US Navy. After serving in the Navy during WWII he came back to Charlestown and worked for another 4 years in the shipyard. In 1950, he rejoined the US Navy and served as a Quarter Master 2nd Class during the Korean War. After his discharge from the service he went to Northeastern University and graduated with a degree in accounting. Mr. Tucker worked for the Rockland Atlas National Bank for a short time, he was a master controller for Stop & Shop Bakery for over 10 years and then helped set up the MasterCard system with the local Boston Banks. Ed moved to Melrose in 1963, where he worked as an accountant and started his own firm, F & S Accounting in 1965. He has run the business for the past 44 years at 45 Essex St. in Melrose. Edward stayed very dedicated to his fellow veteran soldiers through out his life, serving as Past & Present Commander of the USS Constitution VFW Post #3339 in Dorchester, as Past State Commander of MOC, nickname of "Cooties", which is a group of veterans that do volunteer work at the local VA Hospitals and help raise money selling the little red poppies. When his children were younger he was a volunteer bus driver for the LT. Norman Prince Drum & Bugle Corps, as well as driving the school bus for Melrose High School and bus trips to Foxwoods. In the 1960's & 1970's he was a member of the Boston Sparks Association where he drove the Salvation Army truck handing out food and hot coffee to those affected by the fire. Mr. Tucker enjoyed competitive ballroom roller-skating, was a member of the Melrose AmVets, the Tewksbury/Wilmington Elks #2070 and the Melrose Lyons Club serving food at the Melrose High football games. Loving husband of the late Shelia A. (Martin) Tucker. Devoted father of Edward J. Tucker Jr. & his wife Jennifer of Tewksbury, Stephen M. & Richard W. Tucker both of FL, David A. Tucker of Wilmington and Kenneth J. Tucker of Melrose. Brother of James, Philip, Thomas Tucker & the late Millie Kane. Also survived by 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday, May 9th at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Friday from 4-9PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
