Edwin B. ''Bud'' Wood died at Lahey Clinic in Burlington Sept. 18 at the age of 76. Bud was born in Stoneham, was a lifelong resident of Melrose and graduated from Malden Catholic High School. He left during his junior year of high school to serve in the US Navy during WWII on a destroyer escort and returned to Malden Catholic High School after the war to finish his studies and graduate. He received an Associates Degree in Fire Science from North Shore Community College. Bud was appointed the City of Melrose Fire Dept. June 1,1947, he became Lt. Bud Wood on April 19,1961, Captain on Jan 22,1969 and retired from the Melrose Fire Dept. Jan. 5,1988. Captain Wood was a former instructor at the Mass. Firefighter's Academy, a member of the Melrose Elks , Melrose K of C, VFW Harold O. Young Post #2394, Melrose Firefighter's Local #1617 and Boston Celtic Fire Brigade. Bud has lived in Nokomis Fl the last 6yrs and has summered at Northwood Lake in Northwood NH for 28yrs. He was a board member of the Northwood Lake Water Shed Assoc., Red Bates Square Dance Club in FL, St. Joseph's Church in Northwood and Epiphany Cathedral in Venice Florida. He was also a longtime member of Incarnation Church in Melrose. He was the husband of Marie T. (MacDonald) Wood. Father of Maryellen Dee of Stoneham, Patricia A. Campbell & her husband Ron of Melrose and the late Butch Wood. Also father to Ernest Galipeau of Lynn, Karen Vernaci of Lynn, Arlene Willette of Methuen and Shawn Auger of Medford. Brother of Elizabeth L. Wood of Melrose. Also survived by 12 grandchildren. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Friday Sept. 21st at 9AM. Funeral mass in The Church of the Incarnation 429 Upham St. Melrose at 10 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8 PM.
