Obituary

Eileen was born of humble beginnings in Somerville, MA on July 7, 1928 to Hugh and Mary MacVarish, who had recently settled in Boston from Prince Edward Island, Canada. Eileen was the oldest of six daughters. Her family struggled on a Barber's salary through the Great Depression and being of Scottish descent she learned how to stretch a penny all her life. As a young lady in Medford she worked at a local bank to help support her family. When her Mom got sick with cancer, she helped raise her five sisters who remained remarkably close all their lives. They were role models for future generations. Eileen met the love of her life, James A Lynch Jr, and they were married on Oct 15, 1955 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Medford MA. They bought their first and only house in Melrose, MA in 1958. They had a great marriage of over 55 years! Eileen was a proud and devoted homemaker and raised 5 children: Jay, Linda, Chris, David, and Janet. Eileen was very active in the Melrose community for over 60 years, tracking local politics and events. She and Jim were founding members of the Incarnation Church and were a fixture there for decades Eileen was an avid bowler in the Melrose Women's Bowling League and met many friends over the years. She was well loved in the neighborhood and kept track of the many families through the years. An incredibly supportive wife helping Jim have an excellent career as an Insurance business owner, a Major General in the Massachusetts National Guard, and past Commander of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. They had a winter home in Florida. They travelled around the world and Eileen got to meet the Queen of England and Pope John Paul II. She loved improving on her home, inside and out. She loved to plant, and bird watch, especially the local cardinals. She loved many television shows, especially Channel 2, Masterpiece Theatre. She was a big local sports fan especially College Football and March Madness Basketball. She was a big fan of the Boston College Eagles, and of course the Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox, and Patriots. A strong democrat who was not shy to debate current affairs. An avid reader of the newspaper and many books. Her biggest accomplishment was being a loving and supportive mother of five, grandmother of 13, great-grandmother of 2. Eileen's home was always a safe haven full of love for her children and she was always interested in what was going on in their lives and the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She ran countless birthday and Christmas Eve parties showing true love to her family. She was always inquisitive, caring, and kind and quick to give a warm welcoming smile and hug. Her life was a true blessing, and her memories a treasure. She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. Her spirit will live on in all her family.
