Attorney Eli G. Mavros of Nahant died on Monday, February 27, 2012, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston at age 79. Born on November 22, 1932, in Lynn, he was one of nine children of the late Andronicus and Mary (Mankin) Mavros. Eli was raised in Lynn and graduated from Lynn Classical High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served for four years during the Korean War, entertaining fellow service members as a pitcher on the Air Force baseball team. He earned his law degree from Boston's New England School of Law and worked as an attorney from 1962 until his death. In 1962 he founded the Law Offices of Mavros & Fitzgerald, located in Lynn and still in operation today. Eli was a member of the Greater Lynn, Essex County and Massachusetts Bar Associations; he also served for many years on the Board of Appeals of Nahant. He belonged to St. Thomas Aquinas Church of Nahant, where he served as a Eucharistic minister. A devoted husband and father, Eli is survived by his wife of 36 years, Elaine (O'Shea) Mavros, their daughter Shea A. Mavros of Nahant, their son Eli G. "Casey" Mavros II of Brooklyn, New York, and a daughter-in-law, Jennifer R. Cohen. He was the caring brother of Andrew Mavros and his wife Virginia of Lynn, Elaine Murphy of New Hampshire and six late siblings. He also leaves behind four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Adored by his family and friends, Eli enjoyed cooking, spending time with his loved ones, traveling with his son, visiting his extended family in Ireland and gardening with his daughter; he was an avid sports fan and especially loved baseball. Visiting hours will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 248 Nahant Road in Nahant, on Thursday, March 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Friday, March 2, at 10 a.m. Eli will then be interred at Nahant's Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to help honor and celebrate Eli's life; arrangements for these events have been made by the Gately Funeral Home of Melrose.
