Obituary

Emmett, Elizabeth Agnes (Dyer) 84, died peacefully on August 13, 2011. Born in 1926 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, she was the daughter of Edward Leo and Agnes (Kyle) Dyer. She emigrated with her family (twice) in the 1930's and grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY. She learned to play the piano well, as did her brother Michael, and graduated from the Fontbonne Academy. As a young woman, Liz worked at The Brooklyn Eagle newspaper, and traveled to Canada to ski and around the southern US. In the late 1940's, she moved to a job at AAA in the Pennsylvania Hotel in Manhattan, where she met her husband, Edwin M. Emmett, late of the Army Air Corps and Philadelphia, PA. Liz and Edwin lived in Brooklyn, where their daughter Constance was born, and spent many years in the Nyack, NY area, where Liz worked at the Lamont Geological Observatory, before moving back to New York City. While back in New York and settled into her dream job at WNET Channel 13, Liz traveled to Portugal, Romania, and Turkey. She and Edwin traveled across the US and Mexico, and left New York for Greenville, NC in the 1980's. After Edwin's death in 2003, Liz traveled back to Belfast with her daughter, and then moved to Melrose, MA. Liz was a great cook and knitter; a musical person, she loved to sing, listen to music, and play the piano; she also loved to read, watch movies, and to laugh, and she adored the sophisticated and cosmopolitan. Walking around west midtown Manhattan with Liz in the 1970's was like being with the Mayor: passersby yelled hello, people came out of restaurants and shops to greet her. She worked in the neighborhood in the publicity department of WNET, New York's PBS station, and somehow, everyone in the neighborhood knew her and wanted a moment of her chat. So it was too, later in life, at the Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford, MA: everyone on the staff knew her, because Liz, still energetic at 84, accompanied the director of her residence on daily errands, and chatted with everyone. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother Michael Leo Dyer, and her great friend, Angie Snelling. She is survived by her daughter Constance Emmett, her daughter-in-law Suzy Q Groden and her dog Winnie, all of Melrose. She is also survived by: her brother and sister-in-law Denis A. and Patricia Dyer; her sister-in-law, Carol Dyer; nieces, Pamela, Janet, Deborah and Kyle; nephews, Gregory, Timothy and Cary, and many grandnieces and grandnephews; her "second daughter," AJ Plummer, and all of her wonderful friends, especially those at the Courtyard Nursing Care Center and Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford, MA. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday, September 10th from 2:00-5:00PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's research Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472, www.alz.org/MANH.
