Elizabeth O. "Betty" (Otis) Huntress passed away at Putnam Farm at Danvers on August 1, 2014. She was 81 years of age. Betty was born in Melrose on December 3, 1932 to the late J. Henry & Mary (Switzler) Otis. She was raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1951 and from Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists in 1953. Mrs. Huntress worked as a dental hygienist before leaving her position to help her husband start Huntress Insurance Agency. Betty was a lifelong resident of Melrose and spent winters golfing with her husband Bill in Rio Verde, Arizona since 1968. The last 3 years she lived at the Putnam Farm in Danvers where she met many wonderful friends, enjoyed playing bridge and helped start a bridge group at Putnam Farm. Betty was an accomplished pianist and a talented artist. She was an avid golfer, a former member of Bellevue Golf Club in Melrose and was a member of Salem Country Club from 1978 to 2012. Betty was also involved with the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts, a 50 year member of P.E.O., a longtime member of Phi Theta XI in Melrose and a member of the First Congregational Church in Melrose. Mrs. Huntress was beloved wife of nearly 60 years to the late William C. Huntress Jr. Loving mother of Beverly Russo & her husband Randel of Ellington, CT, William C. Huntress, III of Melrose & Barbara H. Tresness & her husband Greg of Manlius, NY. Cherished grandmother of Richard Russo, Sarah Pashe, Tyler & Caroline Huntress, Colby, Tysen & Graham Tresness. Great Grandmother of Rian, Joseph, Caleb & Keegan Russo and Nathan & Julianne Pashe. Sister of James Otis of Melrose & Virginia Williams of NH. Sister-in-law of Robert Daniels of Peabody and his late wife Louise. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St. Melrose on Monday, August 11th from 4:00-7:00PM, followed by a Funeral Service at the Gately Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 12th at 10:00AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. In Lieu of flowers memorial contribution may be made to in Betty's name to Melrose Veteran's Fund, Melrose City Hall, c/o Veteran Services, 562 Main St. Melrose, MA 02176 or a charity of your choice.
