Elizabeth L. "Betty" (Lyons) O'Brien of Stoneham, died on Monday, August 17, 2009 at the Aberjona Nursing Center of Winchester. She was 94 years old. Born on October 29, 1914 in Medford to the late Thomas & Christina (McGinnis) Lyons, she was raised in Medford and a 1932 graduate of Medford High School. Betty worked in the General Motors Building in Royal Oak, Michigan as an accountant with an airline travel agency for many years and then as a consumer relations specialist with Safeway in San Ramon, California for 15 years. She enjoyed traveling and also lived in Costa Rica and Mexico. She loved people, talking, telling stories, politics, the Red Sox and shopping. Betty even became friendly with the workers from QVC because she bought so many things from the show after she couldn't go out shopping anymore. She was very intelligent and one of a kind. Her motto was "Be good to yourself, you deserve it." Ms. O'Brien was a resident of Stoneham for 15 years; a member of St. Patrick's Church of Stoneham and continued watching mass on TV when she couldn't make it church anymore. All her friends knew her as Betty but her nieces and nephews nicknamed her "Gogi". She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph P. O'Brien, with whom she shared 38 years of marriage. She was the caring sister of Frances Murphy of Melrose & the late Edward Lyons, Helen Sheehan, Harold & Kenneth Lyons. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces & grand nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Fri. Aug. 21st at 9AM. Funeral Mass in St. Patrick's Church 71 Central St. Stoneham at 10AM. Visiting hours Thurs. 4-8PM.
