Elizabeth Louise Wood passed away at the VA Hospital in Bedford, on Saturday, July 7, 2012. She was 88 years of age. Elizabeth was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts on February 25, 1924, to the late Edwin & Elizabeth (Riley) Wood. She was raised in Melrose, graduated from Girls Catholic High School in Malden and was a lifelong resident of Melrose, until moving to Bedford 6 years ago. Miss Wood worked as a nurse's aide in the Wave Hospital Corps in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War, before becoming disabled in a car accident. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church, St. Mary's Ladies Sodality and was a member of the National DAV Association. Miss Wood was an avid reader and thoroughly enjoyed playing bingo and the social life at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bedford, where she had many dear friends. Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Edwin & Elizabeth (Riley) Wood. Sister of the late Edwin "Bud" Wood & his wife Marie of FL. Aunt of Maryellen Dee of Stoneham, Patricia Campbell & her husband Ron of FL and the late Edwin "Butch" Wood & his wife Angela of AZ. Great aunt of Jean-Marie Medina of Melrose, Elizabeth Wood of AZ and Justin Cottone of FL. Also survived by several great great nieces & nephews. Beloved friend to all the residents & staff at the Bedford VA. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Wednesday, July 11th, at 8AM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9AM. Relatives & friends invited. There are no visiting hours. Interment with Military Honors at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
