Ellen S. (Powers) Hayes, of Wakefield, passed away at her daughter's home in Andover on Sunday, May 4, 2008. She was 81 years old. Born on December 6, 1926 in East Boston to the late Nicholas & Stella (Lee) Powers, she was raised in East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School, class of 1945. Ellen lived in Wakefield for 53 years and was a member of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church of Wakefield. She was a homemaker but worked after her children were older at Fraen's of Wakefield for 10 years. She enjoyed traveling, shopping for a bargain, riding her bike, Cape Cod, shoveling her driveway after a snowstorm and cutting her lawn. However, her biggest joy was her family. She loved spending time with her 5 children, 11 grandchildren & 3great grandchildren. Ellen was the devoted wife of 35 years to the late Eugene F. Hayes, loving mother of Alice Smith of Clearwater, FL. Walter J. Smith & his wife Beth of Wakefield, Eugene F. Hayes, Jr. & his wife Theresa of Southborough, Ellen M. Reynolds & her husband William of Canton & Patricia M. Martin & her husband James of Andover. Cherished grandmother of 11 & great grandmother of 3. Caring sister of Margaret Montgomery, Thomas Powers, Alice DiSemone, Rita Capezzuto, Cora Webster, Patty Dente & James Powers. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thurs. May 8th at 9AM. Funeral mass in Most Blessed Sacrament Church 1155 Main St., Wakefield at 10AM. Family & friends invited. Visiting hours Wed. 4-8PM. Interment in Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
