Obituary

Elvidio (Al) Bertulli, of Melrose, MA, passed away peacefully on Friday October 5, 2007 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on October 27, 1911 in Fano, Italy. He migrated with his family to the United States in 1913. He was raised and attended school in Everett, MA. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1933. He worked a variety of jobs in the Boston area while he attended the U.S. Diesel Engineering School. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army (Detachment 9304th Technical Service Unit) and served in Maryland and Atlanta, Georgia. He received Good Conduct and Victory and American Theatre ribbons and was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1941 he began a 33 year career with General Electric at the plant in Lynn, MA. He worked for the jet engine testing and research department. He retired in 1974 but continued doing technical work for General Electric as a consultant for another 10 years. He always enjoyed the challenges of a new project, and enjoyed friendships with his co-workers. Al was active in the Melrose community throughout his life. When his children were growing up he was active in the Boy Scouts of America and he belonged to the Knights of Columbus at the Incarnation Church. After he retired from General Electric he volunteered with Meals on Wheels, F.I.S.H. and became a board member of Mystic Valley Elder Care. He was a long time volunteer at the Milano Senior Center in Melrose until 2004. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Mary Frances (Logan) of Athol, Somerville, and Melrose, MA., his children Catherine Bertulli and son-in-law, Roger Lavoie of Melrose MA, Anne and son in law Chuck Whitehouse of Isleboro, ME, Robert and wife Laurie Bertulli of Bowdoinham, ME, Mary and son in law David Brooks of Dracut, MA and Karleen and son-in law Mark Andrews of Farmington, ME and his sister Yolanda Bertulli, formerly of East Boston, MA. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, Christopher and Gregory Lavoie, Misty Bertulli, Sarah and Adam Bertulli, Zachary and Katie Brooks and Shawn and Tim Andrews and his five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 4 nieces and nephews, 2 grand-nieces and 6 grand- nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Luigi and Annunziata (Francolini) Bertulli and his sisters and their husbands, Maria and Charles Lepore of Everett, MA and Alda and Ernie Labadini of East Boston, MA. He was also predeceased by a son, Brian L. Bertulli in 1973. As a young man he enjoyed bike trips in New England, photography and ham radio operation. He also enjoyed camping trips with his young family, family cook-outs and working on home improvement projects (especially the rock wall.) Al will always be remembered for his personal dignity, respect and kindness for others, optimism , conscientious work ethic, humor, frugality, willingness to share with others in need, love of country, devotion to church and enduring love for his wife and family. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Friday Oct. 12th at 9:15AM. Funeral Mass in the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10:30AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Thursday from 4-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
