ETHEL F. (LaValley) GATELY, 87, of Somerville, April 13, 2008. Loving mother of Brian F. Gately and his wife Diane of Melrose. Cherished grandmother of Alan F. Gately and his fiance Cynthia Chan of Somerville, and Michael J. Gately and his wife Susan of Rochester, NY. Mother of Paul J. Gately and his wife Patricia of Worcester. Grandmother of Timothy Gately and Neal Gately. Devoted sister of the late Gertrude Perry. Ethel lived most of her life in Somerville and was a secretary for the Somerville School Department for more than 25 years. She was also a member of the Somerville Hospital Ladies' Aid Association for over 20 years. Ethel volunteered at the Sixty Plus Health Clinic, the Assisted Living Facility on Lowell Street, and Little Sisters of the Poor, all in Somerville. When she wasn't volunteering, Ethel spent most of her spare time crocheting and knitting, and donated much of her handiwork to local charities. Funeral mass will be private. There are no visiting hours. Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ethel's memory to Little Sisters of the Poor, 186 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA 02143. Arrangements by the Gately Funeral Home, Melrose.
