Eva C. (Tsoules) Contis, of Melrose, died on March 7, 2008 at the Norwell Knoll Nursing & Rehab. Center in Norwell at the age of 94. Eva (Evdoxia) (Tsoules), Contis was born in Phiniki Greece on January 7, 1914. She came to Southbridge, MA with her mother and siblings when she was 6 years old. They came to join her father who owned Sunrise Bakery in Southbridge. Eva was the daughter of the Elias & Madeleine Tsoules. She married Charles D. Contis her childhood sweetheart, when she was 20 and they moved to Revere and subsequently to Melrose, MA where she lived for 63 years. During those years, She worked at the First National Store on Wyoming Avenue & Baybank and though those jobs got to know practically everyone in Melrose because of her outgoing personality. Eva loved to treat the little children "giving them quarters and special treats. Eva spent many years volunteering at the Melrose Hospital, and in spite of her long work hours, she continued to enjoy learning. She attended many adult education classes, she took courses at Salem State College when she was in her 60's. She loved working in her wonderful & bountiful garden, being a member of the Melrose Arts & Crafts and taking care of her home. Her biggest pleasures however, came from being with her grandchildren, and cooking wonderful Greek meals. There was always a pie and special cookies waiting for her family & friends to enjoy. Eva was a member of the Greek Philoptikos Society and past president of the PTA at the Boston Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles D. Contis, who died in 1992. Loving mother of James C. Contis & his wife Carolyn of Cohasset and Madeleine I. Marken of Falmouth. Sister of Sophie Sigros of Sturbridge, Ernest Tsoules of Southbridge and the late Olga Pantos. Cherished grandmother of James M. Contis of Marblehead, Kristen D. Lacount of Melrose, Melanie Marken of Cambridge, Charles D. Marken of Falmouth and Anthony M. Marken of Lexington. Great grandmother of Gage & Kallie Lacount, Eva Contis and Ava & Tess Marken. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and godchildren. A funeral service will be held at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, 545 South Common St., Lynn on Wednesday March 12th at 11AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours on Tuesday March 11th at the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose from 4-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Eva's memory to St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, 545 S. Common St., Lynn, MA 01901.
