Obituary

Evangeline Morris Bachelder of Melrose, MA, beloved wife of the late Horace Lyman Bachelder (1915-1981), passed away on Monday, November 12, at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital from ovarian cancer. She was 87. Evangeline, affectionately known as Danny, was born in Ripley, Tennessee, the daughter of Stephen Morris and Clara Grammar Morris Evangeline was a highly accomplished pianist, having studied with such well-known teachers as Bruce Symonds at Yale, and Nellie Tholen at Lewis and Clark. Over the years she brought great enjoyment to many people with her beautiful interpretations of so many great pieces of the classical repertoire. She was also a very outgoing and sociable person, thriving on upbeat and humorous conversations with her family, friends, and anyone she met; and a wonderful public speaker and teller of entertaining stories; a legacy no doubt of her Southern upbringing. Evangeline was a graduate of Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia where she earned a Bachelors degree in Music, Yale University with a post-graduate degree in Music, Portland State University with a teaching degree in English, and Lewis and Clark University with a Masters degree in Music. After her marriage to Horace, the couple resided in Georgia; New Haven, Connecticut where they both attended graduate school at Yale University; Oregon City, Oregon for 25 years, and Plymouth, MA for 14 years. Evangeline then moved to Melrose upon her retirement in 1986 to be near her children. She was a Music and English teacher in Oregon and the Plymouth school systems until her retirement in 1985. She was also the organist at the Atkinson Memorial Church in Oregon City and the First Parish Church in Plymouth where her husband was minister. Evangeline also was an outstanding teacher of piano to private students in Oregon, Plymouth and Melrose. Evangeline enjoyed attending meetings of the Beethoven Society and performances of the Melrose Symphony Orchestra and the Melrose High School Orchestra over the years. She also enjoyed attending performances and sporting events in which her children and grandchildren participated. She became an avid Red Sox fan in her later years and watched nightly games with her family. Evangeline was happiest when she was spending time with her family. Mrs. Bachelder was the loving mother of four children and six grandchildren: daughter Ann L. Goulka of Cave Creek, AZ and her children Jeremiah and Sarah Goulka, daughter Margaret Bachelder Allen of West Newton, MA, son Stephen M. Bachelder of Portland, OR and his children Bradley and Emily Bachelder, and son Edward L. Bachelder of Melrose, MA and his children Charlie and Hannah Bachelder. She is also survived by two sisters, Martha Robinson of Key West, FL and Elmer Childress of Ripley, TN. Visiting hours will be held at Gately Funeral Home in Melrose from 4-8 PM on Wednesday, November 21, 2007.
