IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn A. (Breen)
Mallon
January 9, 1936 – January 17, 2026
Evelyn Ann (Breen) Mallon passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026 at the age of 90. Evie was born in the Edgeworth section of Malden on January 9, 1936 to the late Harold and Evelyn Breen. She grew up in Malden and graduated from Girls Catholic High School. It was in Malden where she met and married the love of her life, Richard T. (“Dick”) Mallon, Sr. Evie would be sitting on her front porch and notice the handsome red head who walked by.
Evie and Dick were married for 58 years. They moved to Melrose in 1962 where they lived for 52 years and raised their family of five children, the pride of their lives.
Soon after they married, Dick came home and announced that he had quit his job at State Street Bank so that he could start their own real estate, income tax, and insurance business. She was with him from the beginning, running the office and typing up each tax return as he prepared them.
As the business grew, she moved on to raise their family of five children in their Youle Street home. She is survived by her children Diane Ryding and her husband Clifford of Westford, MA; Donna Mallon Demarkis of Gloucester, MA; Richard Mallon, Jr. and his partner Patricia Franco of Reading, MA; Joseph Mallon and his wife Karen (Emery) of Saugus, MA; and Thomas Mallon and his wife Sharon (Olsen) of Stratham, NH. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Evie is also survived by her three brothers, Robert Breen, Paul Breen, and Gerald Breen and his wife Denise.
Evie loved her grandchildren and the memories made when everyone was together at Lake Winnisquam in NH. She was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Parish in Melrose and a fixture of the choir there for many happy years.
In retirement, Evie took up golf as a shared hobby with Dick and enjoyed their weekly game at Bellevue Golf Club. They enjoyed many close friendships there.
At Christmas, she received a plaque from the wonderful, loving, caring staff at The Arbors recognizing her ten years there as the de facto mayor, manning her post in the lobby greeting everyone with a smile and offer to help. She celebrated her 90th birthday with a party attended by many family and friends just a week before her passing.
Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose, on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 8:30am-10:30am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, 4 Herbert St., Melrose at 11:00am. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment to follow at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Evelyn’s memory to The Arbors Stoneham Assisted Living, 140 Franklin Street, Stoneham, MA 02180 (with Stephen’s Bingo in the memo section), or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 0170.
