Francis J. Doherty passed away suddenly at his home in Melrose on July 18th, at the age of 87. He was born and raised in Everett, graduated from Everett High and Tufts University with an undergraduate and masters degree in history. Francis was a Retired LT Commander in the US Navy, serving during the WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars. He lived in Washington DC, Revere for 16 years and Melrose the past 40 years. Mr. Doherty taught history at Revere Junior High School for 10 years and then as a guidance councilor for 20 years. Francis was a world traveler and historian, was a member of the Revere Elks and the Navy Wardroom Club in Boston. He was the loving husband of for over 62 years to the late Thelma J. (King) Doherty. Father of Patricia Zibrofski & her husband Tom of Melrose, Francis J. Doherty Jr. & his wife Barbara of Marblehead, Diane Abbonizio of Melrose, James W. Doherty & his wife Gail of Wolfboro, NH, Susan D. Mayo & her husband Hughes of Melrose, Kathleen Farrell & her husband John of Melrose, Stacey D. Farrell & her husband James of Melrose, and the late John S. Doherty and the late Kevin J. Doherty. Devoted grandfather of Joseph Doherty, Jill Halligan, Monique Abbonizio, Lisa Watt, the late Oliver Abbonizio, Erin Zibrofski, Heather Doherty, Garrett Doherty, Kathleen Mayo, Bridget Doherty, Hughes Mayo, IV, Kevin Doherty, Sean Doherty, Michael Doherty, Shanon Doherty, and Amanda & Samantha Farrell. Great grandfather of Rachel, Nicholas & Daniel Doherty, Kelli & Chloe Halligan and Ian Watt. Brother of Florence McDonough of S.Boston and Catherine Leacu of Newton. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W Foster St Melrose, on Thurs. July 22nd at 9:00 AM. Funeral Mass in the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St. Melrose, at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Wednesday 6-8PM only. Burial will be in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
