Francis G McGrath, of Alton Bay, NH, formally of Saugus, died on Monday, November 20, 2023 at the Jeffrey and Susan Brudnick Center for Living in Peabody at the age of 92.

Born on September 30, 1931 in Malden, he was the son of Michael and Jennie (Clarke) McGrath and grew up in Malden, graduating from Malden Catholic High School in 1949.

On June 26, 1954 Fran married Caryl (Stapleton) at St Joseph's church in Malden and enjoyed 54 years of marriage until her passing in 2008

Fran graduated from Northeastern University and went on to work at the Boston Naval Shipyard as a naval architect where he worked on many of the Navy's recommissioned battle ships, destroyers and aircraft carriers. His career took him all over the world and began his love of traveling. He retired from the Navy Yard in 1986 and went on to work at Marine Systems in Boston, continuing the same line of work until he retired 10 years later in 1996.

After retirement he and Caryl began spending their winters in West Palm Beach, FL and summers on the lake in Alton Bay, NH

He enjoyed traveling, taking cruises, working in his yard and spending time with his family on the lake in his pontoon boat

He was the loving father of Kathy Calandro and her husband Garry of Lynn, Paul McGrath and his wife Karen of Peabody, Colleen Spinale of St John, VI and the late Michael McGrath. Cherished grandfather of Shauna McGrath and her husband Bill Keenan of Melrose, Johnny Spinale of Florida, and Roman Spinale of St John, VI

He was the caring brother of the late James, George and Joseph McGrath, and Eileen Terrio.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews

Visitation will be held on Thursday November 30, 2023 from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM at the Gately Funeral Home 79 W Foster Street, Melrose. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1:30 PM. Burial in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472
