George T. Busby, a retired Melrose Police Detective, passed away at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on Thursday September 26, 2013. He was 82 years of age. George was born in Somerville, MA on December 31, 1930 to the late George T. Sr. & Elizabeth (Doherty) Busby. He was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School, Class of 1948. Mr. Busby moved to Melrose in 1961 and started his career with the Melrose Police Department in 1965. George worked as a patrolman for 7 years before being named a detective in 1972 and retired from the police department in 1994. He was very active with The Jimmy Fund, raising money thru softball games and recruiting players from the Boston Bruins, Celtics and Patriots teams to help out. George played on the Melrose Police Softball team for many years, was a member of the Melrose Police Association, Massachusetts Police Association, VFW Post #639 in Malden, the American Legion in Woburn and the Moose Family Center in Woburn. Mr. Busby cherished the times spent with his family, enjoyed his trips every years to the Elms in NH and to Hampton beach for the 4th of July. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to Nancy L. (Bradley) Busby. Loving father of Donna L. Connolly & her husband Thomas Jr. of Sanford, ME and Patricia A. Waters & her husband Daniel of Swampscott. Devoted grandfather of Alicia Rowe, Heather Miller, Stephanie Waters, Thomas Connolly III, Jeffrey Connolly & Matthew Connolly. Cherished great grandfather of Dylan Connolly & Christopher Rowe. Loving brother of William Busby of NH, Elizabeth Ober of Woburn, Robert Busby of Quincy and the late Christine Vicario, Catherine Hayden and James Busby. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 St. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday September 30th at 9:00AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose at 10AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday from 2:00-6:00PM. Interment with Military Honors at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
