Obituary

George Daniel Delaney passed away on September 3, 2015 at Epoch of Melrose Nursing Home. He was 85 years of age. George was born in Melrose on October 3, 1929 to the late Daniel & Johanna (Gertsen) Delaney. He was raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1947 and has been a lifelong resident. George owned and operated the Skate & Ski Sport Shop on Main Street in Melrose for many years, the Tennis Barn in Saugus and finished his career as the owner of Second Serve in Saugus, a tennis shop providing racquets and clothing to his customers. He married his late wife Mary who passed away last April in 1968 and together they enjoyed skiing, skating and playing tennis. They loved spending time in Waterville valley, taking trips to Nantucket and visiting Sandwich on Cape Cod. George was a proud grandfather, had a great personality and a wonderful sense of humor. He provided many Melrosians with sports equipment throughout his life. Mr. Delaney was the beloved husband of the late Mary J. (Niska) Delaney. Loving father of Lia Swajian & her husband Robert of Haverhill. Proud grandfather of Elijah Delaney. Also survived by many loving relatives & friends. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St. Melrose, on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 5:00-7:00PM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial at Wyoming Cemetery will be private.
