Obituary

George A. Farr, Sr. of Melrose died on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 75 years. old. Born in Melrose on June 11, 1937, he was the youngest son of the late Richard & Allie (Lake) Farr. George was raised in Melrose, attended Melrose High School and Malden Vocational School and then enlisted in the United States Navy and served our country proudly on the USS Aircraft Carrier Leyte during the Korean War. Mr. Farr worked as a Melrose Firefighter from 1964 until his retirement in 1994. He served as the vice president and secretary-treasurer of Local 1617 and was the past president of the Melrose Mutual Aid Association. He was elected to the Melrose Retirement Board and served on the Board of Directors and Past President of the Melrose Credit Union. He was a member of the American Legion and the Melrose Fish and Game Club. George enjoyed golfing with his Four Wood, fishing, playing cards every Friday Night at the Fish, a good cigar and his 25 years traveling as a snowbird to Ft. Myers, Florida. However, his true joy was his family and many close friends. He was the devoted husband of the late Lucy M. (Caswell) Farr with whom he shared almost 50 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Kimberly Baldi of Malden, Robert J. Farr & his wife Kathleen & George A. Farr, Jr. & his wife Carol, all of Melrose. Proud grandfather of Bobby & Harmonie Baldi, Bobby, Michael & Eric Farr & Josh & Jessica Farr. Great grandfather of Bobby, Zach, Gabe, Joelle & Dominic. Youngest brother of the late Richard, Robert & James Farr. A Funeral Service will be held in the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Tuesday, September 25th at 10AM followed by Military Honors. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4-8PM. Interment is private. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in George's memory may be made to the Melrose Firefighter's Relief Fund 576 Main St., Melrose, MA 02176.
