George E. Al Howard passed away at The Chelsea Soldiers Home, on Nov.6th; he was 90 years of age. Al was born and raised in Saugus, graduated from Saugus High School, Class of 1932 and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Howard joined the Saugus Fire Department in 1948, worked as a firefighter for 29 years, retiring in 1977. Al worked part-time for Sweeney Oil Company in Saugus for many years. After retirement, he worked for the Gately Funeral Home in Melrose for over 20 years. Mr. Howard was a WWII Army Veteran, a member of the Saugus Firefighters Union, enjoyed summers in Bridgton Maine for over 30 years and gardening. He was the beloved husband of the late L. Dorothy (Gorham) Howard. Loving father of Dorothy Serozynsky & her husband Dick, Susan Noonan & her husband Michael and Ruth M. Howard all of Saugus. Caring brother of the late Stanley Howard. Cherished grandfather of Cheryl Fairbrother, Carol Lancey and Jon Batchelder. Great grandfather of Tara & Tiffany Lancey and Kayla & Kristen Fairbrother. A funeral service will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Thurs. Nov. 10th, at 11AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Wed. 4-8PM. Burial in Riverside Cemetery in Saugus.
