George J. McGovern passed away at the Life Care Center in Stoneham, on Monday morning November 5, 2012. He was 78 years of age. George was born in Somerville on July 13, 1934 to the late John & Mary (Connors) McGovern. He was raised in Somerville, graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in the North End of Boston and received his associates degree from Northeastern University. George served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era. Mr. McGovern owned and operated George J. McGovern Tax Service in Melrose on Essex Street for over 40 years and has been a resident of Melrose for the past 45 years. He was a longtime member of the Norman Prince Drum and Bugle Corps in Melrose, was an avid golfer, enjoyed reading, going to plays, loved politics and was a big Boston Sports Fan. George and his wife Lorraine loved taking trips to Aruba, Hawaii, Bermuda, England, Paris and Europe. He also liked traveling to Myrtle Beach with his sons to play golf. He was the devoted husband of Lorraine M. (Gildea) McGovern. Loving father of George J. McGovern Jr. & his wife Sharon of Saugus, Debra Kott & her husband Carlton of Rutland, Robert McGovern & his wife Joan of Malden, John McGovern & his wife Dawn of Methuen, Toren McGovern of Melrose and Kathy Artz & her fiancé Adam Whitfield of Melrose. Beloved brother of Anne Lenox of Hollis, NH, Rev. Robert McGovern of Washington DC, Ellen & Harold Dale of Melrose and the late John McGovern & Rosemary Mahoney. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and numerous nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Friday, Nov. 9th, at 9AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 10AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday from 4:00-8:00PM. Burial will be private.
