George F. Norton, of Melrose, died at the Winchester Nursing Center on October 22, 2010 at the age of 81. George was born & raised in Medford and a graduate of Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1947. He attended Boston College for several years and worked Security for Eastern Gas & Fuel of Everett and Stop & Shop for 8 years. George went on become a Wayland Police Officer for 23 years before retiring in 1991. He was the past President of the Mass. Crime Prevention Association for several years. After retiring from the Police Dept., he worked as a Night Supervisor for Wackenhut Security. George liked to tell stories, collect patches of the many Police Departments, volunteered at the Immigrant Learning Center in Malden teaching English & other languages, volunteered at the Parmenter VNA of Wayland and helping people. He had his own Community Pulse cable TV Show on Wayland TV and had a commercial with McGruff the Crime Dog. George was the beloved husband of Mary T. Norton for 55 years. Loving father of Mary Lou DeRosa & her husband Giovanni of Saugus, Nancy M. Melanson & her husband Tom of Melrose, George A. Norton of East Boston, Jeanne M. Norton of Melrose, Judith M. Hicks & her husband Bill of Melrose and the late Therese M. Norton & Andrew Norton. Devoted brother of Emma Norton of Dorchester and the late Edmund Norton. Cherished grandfather of Katie, Alex, Justin, Andrew, Mary, Luke and Max. Also survived by many nieces & nephews. He was also survived by his favorite grand dog "Jetta". A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church, 270 Elliot St., Newton on Tuesday Oct. 26th at 10:30AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours on Monday at the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose from 4-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
