Obituary

Gerald “Jerry” Kerrigan, 85, of Melrose, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026.

Born on March 27, 1941, in Medford, Massachusetts, Jerry lived a life full of dedication to his family, service to his country, and a thirst for knowledge.

He attended Medford Public Schools before going on to Boston College, where he earned a degree in History.

Jerry proudly served in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain (O-3). After his military service, he built a successful career as an underwriting manager at Commercial Union Insurance.

Jerry was a fighter; he overcame numerous battles with cancer. His daughters lovingly called him the “Energizer Bunny,” as he kept bouncing back from every illness.

Known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor, Jerry spoke rarely, but when he did, you listened, captivated by his stories—only to realize he was pulling your leg. He was an avid reader with a remarkable knowledge of little things. Jerry loved soccer and showed his care in quiet, thoughtful ways—he remembered what you liked and surprised you with small, meaningful gestures.

His family cherishes the memories—like when he emptied coins from his pockets for the kids to dive after in the pool, or when he took them square dancing, creating moments that became lifelong treasures.

Jerry was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara Gibbons Kerrigan, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage and a lifetime of cherished memories.

He is lovingly survived by his daughters, Christine Bonner of Milford, New Hampshire; Lynne Kerrigan of Wakefield, Massachusetts; and Mary Beth Kerrigan of Woburn, Massachusetts; his son-in-law, William Bonner of Milford, New Hampshire; as well as his granddaughters, Jess Bonner of Manchester, New Hampshire; and Grace Kerrigan of Scottsville, New York; his sister-in-law, Patricia Sexton; and many nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jerry will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, kindness, strength, and the quiet, thoughtful ways he showed his love throughout his life.

Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Monday, June 1, 2026, from 9:30AM-11:00AM, followed by a funeral home service at 11:00AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment to follow with military honors at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court Street, Boston, MA 02108.
